Thursday, January 31, 2002 13:06 Dutch boys and girls under pressure Last Friday and Monday were schouw days - something like an extended semester evaluation ritual at the Arnhem design academy. I took the chance to make quick, sneaky pictures of each of the students of classes 3A and 3B (and of some of the teachers too). link

Friday, January 25, 2002 10:38 Moving notice There may be some turbulence in the coming days as the late night pool goes through its second change of hosts: it will now reside at our own server at the Airplant studio (thanks to Fred for the ever improving setup). Bear with me, ja? link

Saturday, January 19, 2002 13:56 recipe Work that smoker magic on crow. Be sure to get the crow before the hunter person plucks off some of the outer feathers. The crow must be completely covered by the feathers. Use peeled back feathers for handles when eating. This recipe multiplies well, and can be used to make crow for a crowd.thanks to leadfoots. link

13:42 Let's say there's a humble pie, and that I am eating a piece of it, and the piece is huge and doesn't seem to end, and when do I know it's over? and will I learn the lesson? that kind of thing. link

13:27 Big discussion going on at Caterina's about junkies, peeing dogs and the public space. What do you think? (don't miss the comments - that's where the debate is) link

Friday, January 18, 2002 20:13 For years, I've led a double life.Double Life (1999, dir. Frank Budgen) remains by far my favorite of the many excellent playstation commercials, followed by Mental Wealth (1999, dir. Chris Cunningham). ![]() link

16:44 ![]() When was it that I first remember watching Lost in Space? Hmm, let's see, I was still living on Rua Maria Vidal, so I was 5 – that brings it to 1971. It was a very cool show and, if you lucked out, you'd catch one of the few episodes when Professor Robinson or (even better) Don West would strap on the good old Jetpack and fly over the dry, rocky planet looking for Penny or some space monster. ![]() I was a boy, I planned to grow up to be an astronaut and I considered it a matter of time until we all would fly around our cities the same elegant way the Robinsons flew over those rocks. Ja ja. Thirty-one years have passed and we all have combadges but there's still nothing new in the sky but – aha! – someone has been trying. Wired news, yesterday: Jetpack Flies (Two Feet) High. link

Sunday, January 13, 2002 15:10 • Nice and relaxing weekend. In het Afrikaans. • Busy with the four-screen video sequence I am designing for the Amsterdams Historisch Museum for their exhibition 'Four Hundred Years of Prostitution'. • Thinking of good improvements/add-ons for Richie's filmblog. Very likely a series of gifs for the rating and the good old comment function. Which reminds me of a very strict grandmother's movie rating criteria. • Thinking of alternative interfaces for the Rhizome collection. • Added to the neighborhood pile'o'links: Felipe's Fotodiario ("a pic a day, every day"). link

Wednesday, January 09, 2002 18:46 This afternoon I started thinking of obstacles and of the exhilaration we feel while overcoming them. Like at the beach: walking in knee-high water and feeling the sea resisting and giving way at the same time. I feel like designing some physical obstacles. It's important. ![]() Browsing books this afternoon I found myself once again amazed at the design of the seating unit Pratone (Ceretti, Derossi, Rosso for Gufram, 1966). Each unit measures 140x140x80cm and connects to other ones by its wavy sides. I would't mind finding a picture of them being actually seated on. link

Tuesday, January 08, 2002 13:14 Lunchtime in Arnhem, where I teach. I just came back from the cafeteria where I sat down with a few of my former students talking about then and now and about the properties of strict teachers versus the ones of relaxed teachers (that's me). The biggest compliment I got at the end of last year was that in my class the production was remarkably diverse and that the students developed themselves in many different, personal directions. Nice, eh? I keep finding it a tough job. I leanerd a lot since I started. link
