Sunday, November 17, 2002 19:33 Doors: loose notes, approximated quotes Axel Thallemer from Festo talked about projects using engineered membranes, pneumatic muscles, inflatables of all sorts. Very exciting stuff. Bruce Sterling on old telephone switchboads operated by the "mistresses of comunication" : "no internet application has ever reached that level of haptic elegance". Felice Frankel on the microscopic beauty of scientific photographs: "I'm from another generation; I know 'beautiful' is not a cool word these days but you shouldn't have to be afraid of using it". Rein Jansma showed future plans for the car park at the Oosterdokseiland (that's across the building where I live) in which chroma-key blue staircase walls allow the superimposing of surveillance cameras images onto live video from a fishtank (?!). The resulting video is projected at the street level and should make the garage users feel safer. Pletts Haque showed lots of work that seemed interesting (including an olfactory installation) but there was no time to explain any of it. Marcel van den Drift, an ex-colleague from the Sandberg Instituut, had the most airtime: with five minutes at the beginning of each session, his intro videos lasted a total of forty minutes, double as much as any of the heavy-duty speakers. link

Tuesday, November 05, 2002 23:40 From the Stψrvatt site: Stψrvatt was originally conceived to provide the luxury of hot water bathing in remote Alaskan areas without electricity. The resulting design, with the stove submerged in the water, has proven to be economical and extraordinary efficient. link

Friday, November 01, 2002 17:18 Bike life (news # 02111) Yesterday morning my bike key broke inside the reasonably new lock (bought precisely three months ago) Roy, my Swedish neighbour, did his best to help me get the broken bit of the key from inside the lock (no success) I left the bike where it was and went to work on foot (luxury life) later on I passed by the store where I had bought the lock and was assured that a new lock would be given to me f.o.c. (free of charge) this morning I managed to transport my bike to the Captain Video studio (the home of all relevant hardware) under the supervision of KeesV I cut my bike open again (much noise) photos by Kees Fopma (aka fopz.com) new free lock by Hema (olι). ![]() link
