Thursday, January 30, 2003 11:11 Just arrived once again in Hilversum. Throughout this week Kees, Oskar and I are supervising the production of image backgrounds for the NOVA programmes. The new design was launched last Monday. Next to the regular logo, title sequence and bumpers we have also a row of four projection screens placed in the studio that give visual context during the conversations and serve as windows through which the international correspondents can join the studio discussion and where pre-edited items can be viewed. The screens are also meant to work as a sort of whiteboard where graphs and data can be displayed during the interviews. The setup allows for many variations in layout (too many) and is fed via four mpeg players and a videowall splitter controlled by a very cool software called medialon (used in theme parks and cruise ships). The big challenge (and the source of some critique) is the journalistic relevance of the images shown on the screen during the interviews and how (or if) they will contribute to the discussion. IMHO news reports are still essentially conceived around argumentative text to which images are added as a sort of illustration. Our design will only take off as a new image culture develops in the editorial team of NOVA. This takes time and we are curious how it will develop. link

Wednesday, January 22, 2003 21:50 ![]() It's happening again: too many interesting activities making it difficult to write anything about all the many interesting activities. I've been working with Oskar and Kees for the last three months (!) on the redesign of a news show. It's looking great and the première is next Monday (NOVA, Ned.3). For the last six weeks I've moved into their studio, which is fun but makes the routine a little more complicated. My backpack has been heavier than ever with lots of items being carried around just in case (yesterday I found a forgotten pear, puréed under all the stuff, luckily still in a ziplock bag). Life at the Oude Braak studio to be resumed next week with many radical changes: Fred Inklaar is moving out thanks to a cool new job at Bureau Mijksenaar, Aldje van Meer is moving in and joining Airplant and Oskar will be stationed with us for the whole of February while we work on the design of TV Noord-Holland. Meanhwile I have a pile of non-written entries and nice photos from this NOVA period; I doubt I will manage to squeeze them out but I'm sure some of the stuff has also been documented by Kees Fopma in his trusty, hiatus-free Fopz.com. Ja. link

Sunday, January 05, 2003 11:58 accounting day 512003-511966=37 unexpected treat: it's snowing outside! ![]() This picture was taken by my father Nicanor (then 35 years old) during a train trip across the São Paulo state in either February or March 1965. My mother tells me I had been conceived just a few hours earlier (in a couchette!). In the photo you can see her, Assumpção (33), my sister Valéria (7) and brother Cássio (8) and also some light seeping in through the window. link
