11:55 long live the options
I finally got to visit the Roze Breekijzer (the Pink Crowbar), a homo squat café a few blocks from home and about to be evicted. Some ten, twelve people were there, some standing and some crammed together on the old couch. Dan took me. Bob was there. Met one Owen with his visiting red-haired nephew and girlfriend.
One wall read:
NOT GAY AS IN HAPPY
BUT QUEER AS IN FUCK YOU
The beer was Grolsch, for one euro, as opposed to the lower-grade Dommelsch sold for three-fifty a few blocks further on the Warmoesstraat. Also the talk at the squat place was remarkably better.

22:24 Martha Colburn: S(c)ensored Movies
A small packed cinema, in front of the audience two musicians wearing Mexican wrestling masks (maybe bondage masks) and behind a woman manipulating two super-8 film projectors, switching films, overlapping the images or juxtaposing them, sometimes applying red filters or causing a hand-made strobe effect. Martha Colburn is WOW!
A multiple projection film program of historical sex films from the dark vaults of Martha Colburn’s personal film collection. This night covers sex films, from rare 8mm ‘stag Films’ of the 1940’s and 50’s, to nature loving hippyporn of the 1960’s to the mass produced and marketed raw realizm of the 1970’s. A special humourous addition to the program is a section of specially re-edited pornographic films whereby the any sex scenes have been deleted. These are mostly silent films and will be accompanied by 45’s dj-ing by Martha Colburn and trombone/electronics by Hilary Jefferies and Felipe Waller. For the most part this is an ‘R’ rated show. XXX will be optional later in the evening. Also screened will be ´A foot fetish film´ by Martha and some other contributions.

Friday 26th September, 20.00 hrs.
Location: Smart Cinema
Entrance: Free

Tribe 03 is just out: Max Kisman's online typography periodical includes photos of the tapewritten words that traditionally appear on the Amsterdam sidewalks every year during Queensday.

10:38 Now that Blogger finally supports Safari – or vice-versa – I've had the pleasure of removing the Explorer icon from my Dock (slow vengeful laughter).

13:48 Materialism!
Three recent tips from Paul (in retro-chronological order):

A very good looking instant inflatable pool available from Iwantoneofthose.com. A real bargain, of you happen to have the right place to put it.

Dutchtub, presented by Floris Schoonderbeek, burning wood and all, at the Milan Furniture Fair 2003

Leandro Erlich's delightful installation Der Swimmingpool.

17:46 From the desk of Rogério Lira
I cleaned up my desk before leaving, so I returned and found a clean desk. Excellent.
The pile of snail-mail included a padded envelope that felt very fluffy to the touch. An inflatable Buddha! The enclosed note, written by Kees Veling with a thick magic marker, read:
for you, because it touches two of your obsessions.
x Kees
Happy.

03:10 Remember
  • Posting during trips doesn't work. It should, but it doesn't – it's a fact. Next time: pictures. At least.
  • People in NY are very concerned about the best way of getting whiter teeth. One cannot avoid noticing the lots of different products and treatments offered everywhere. A weekly magazine had a comprehensive chart comparing the costs, the trouble and the required time for each method.
  • The expansion of the Harvey Milk school is a hot, hot topic. Classes started yesterday, demonstrations (for and against) too.
  • During lunch, Richard Laermer said he thought the Madonna-Britney-Christina kiss was 'an act of desperation'. He's right.
  • There were manymany free wi-fi hotspots covering the parks and squares of Manhattan, but I developed a thing for the one at Bryant Park, behind the main library building. I was in a lousy mood when I logged on, under a parasol because of the rain, and Caterina and Stewart (from Vancouver, via iChat) had a word of comfort for me.
  • There is something even more euphemistic than 'restroom': 'comfort station'. There are euphemisms in every culture and every language for the places used for pissing and shitting; I understand that but find it strange nonetheless.
  • The last New York Times Magazine had a very interesting article called How to reignite the culture wars outlining the most relevant supreme court rulings of the last decades, ending with Lawrence v. Texas decision (last June) which struck down every sodomy law in America.

It's time to board my flight now. More later.
