15:26 Home

The Amsterdam Stadsblad published this week a very nice aerial view of the Centraal Station area, currently a huge mess thanks to the early stages of the construction of the new North-South metro line.
I bike every day through the increasingly obstructed area since live ca. 150m. to the right (East) of the station and have my studio ca. 100m. to the left (West). The aerial view is quite clarifying while the pedestrian/biker perspective is that of an obstacle race.

14:56 Quem nunca morreu está morrendo
E-mailing with Paul:
Subject: Re: Bellocq

I hope you don't mind me sending you these Mr. Boy.

Why would I mind, Mr. Perry?

(How easy would it be to do something like this in after-effects?)

Easy.

I find these two defaced images of Bellocq quite scary. (Bellocq -- an amateur photographer -- photographed whores in New Orleans around 1912.)

I must say they didn't come across as scary at all, even though they are beautiful pictures;
my first impression was just of images that required anonymity, and I see the blotches and scratches the same way I would see black bars over eyes or genitals.

Your remark about them being scary makes me think of the dead group photos used in 'The Others' ? to me those seemed more scary. Now that makes me think of the following:

The review film one sees in the moments preceding of following death should contain lots of memories/scenes involving people. Would there be some sort of notation or marking to differentiate the ones who are already deceased from the ones who still live?
In other words: in such a review film, would people who already have reviewed their lives appear differently than those who haven't?
This doesn't make much sense under Jelal's notion of us being all 'always already dead', but I find it interesting nonetheless.

(Paul and I are at last producing 'Review This Life' - a 360º immersive video experiment)

14:26 Translation
Gabriëlle just told me something she heard from the mouth of a British man or woman:
Food is shit
just waiting to happen
It reminds me of something Anita Pinkuss told me she saw, long ago, written on the inside of the women's toilet in a French restaurant:
Ici tombe en ruine
toute la merveille de la cuisine
Ah, I haven't posted in such a long time. If only you knew all the nice entries I haven't written. Really.

Merel is the Dutch name for a blackbird (Merle, in French). I am designing a little website for a mezzo-soprano friend called Merel Huizinga.

02:10 news from the hole

Just so that you know:
As expected, the ozone hole near Earth's South Pole is back again this year.

This year's hole, being slightly larger than North America, is larger than last year but short of the record set on 2000 September 10.

Ozone is important because it shields us from damaging ultraviolet sunlight.

Ozone is vulnerable, though, to CFCs and halons being released into the atmosphere.

International efforts to reduce the use of these damaging chemicals appear to be having a positive effect on their atmospheric abundance.

The relatively large size of the ozone hole this year, however, is attributed partly to colder than normal air in the surrounding stratosphere.

The above picture of the ozone hole was taken on September 11 by TOMS on board the orbiting Earth Probe satellite.
From NASA's APOD (astronomy picture of the day), through my – not only blood but also cosmic – sister Valéria.

A self-potrait by Gabriëlle, who went one step deeper into the (already pretty outspoken) stripes trip during her birthday.

14:15 I did it. Ha.
